Why do we only ever see Californian wine on sale when many other US states produce quality wine?

Californian wine has the biggest reputation because of it's Mediterranean-type climate. Other states will just have to get their marketing act together, and they'll have to persuade investors in the wine industry to risk investment in non-Californian American wine for world export.
Because you are not looking. Wine from Washington State (biggest brand Columbia Crest) and Oregon are often seen. However US wine prices are not compeptitive and on the past few years the range of US wines available has sharply decreased, leaving the mass market Gallo brand names to dominate supermarket shelves.

.

Most other US states make wine, but one of the largest producers - New York - grow a lot of hybrids which aren't popularwith European drinkers and manty of the wineries are small operations. Add to that they can sell all the wine they make in the US and the complexities of international trade and that accounts for the few non California wines we see.

.

However, some New York and New Mexico producers have attended the London International Wine Fair looking for UK agents so maybe you'll see a non Cal wine soon.
