Are the Shiitake mushroom and the Shitaki mushroom the same or Is shitaki just the mispelt version of Shiitake?

They're just alternatives in the same way as the Arabic name 'Mohammed' is often transcribed as 'Muhammad'. In Japanese, 'shii' means a type of tree and 'take' means a mushroom.
I should have pointed out above that this particular mushroom is specifically cultivated on tree-logs; hence, the 'shii' element..
