Why does McDonalds taste so good yet it is so unhealthy? Like the lyrics from the song by Savage Garden-'I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you..' What makes it taste nice?

Monosodium Glutamate usually (classed under "flavour enhancers"), but there's a bit of psychology there i imagine (the glitz, the glammer, the shitey toys etc)

hello again gibbo, i reckon it's a mental thing, you think it's nice so it is, honestly with my trying to be good diet i hadn't had a mcdonalds for AGES and finally rewarded myself by...getting a mcdonalds! and it was rank. really salty, over-processed, tasteless beef and soggy lettuce. rank von ranken.

agree with apricot you cannot beat a home-made BBurger using top quality butcher's minced steak (not El Cheapos economy mince) or even better minced buffalo if you can get it

I am constantly amazed at people, and not just kids, who actually like McDonalds. Tasteless soggy bread, with greasy, bland meat "patties" made from god knows what part of an animal, with limp lettuce and indescribable sauces. I really do believe that anyone who reckons it tastes good must have a very deprived home life, and little or no experience of proper restaurants. I can make allowances for young children who are seduced by the toys and bright plastic surroundings, but by the time you are in your teens you really should know better.

what is this site ??? veggies r us ?? If so many people didn't like it they wouldn't buy it ! As with Kurger Bing, pizza hut, dominos chip shops etc.etc. The fact is if it's bad for you it tastes good and vice versa. It's lunch so i'm off for a deep fried mars bar. I'm Lovin it ! (IMHO)

oi ned! i think you'll find i gave out meat alternatives so less of the veggie remark! In fact i am a Vegivore if you must ask. (Not only do i eat meat, but i will happily eat any vegetarians who don't eat meat). McDonalds is a tasteless, fatty, cardboardy pile of llama poo, whether you eat meat or not.

If you like McDonalds then fine. Same goes for Pizza Hut, KFC, local chippie etc. etc. Surely the point is to eat a balanced diet overall. Unfortunately too many of our younger folk, and a fair proportion of our older folk don't realise that.

Ned - I resent the suggestion that I might be a veggie. ;-) Pure carnivore through and through. But give me decent taste, texture and vfm. I don't deny that lots of people seem to like it, and of course variety is the spice etc...but it still amazes me.

No i can't stand mcdonalds either, not just for the poor quality food (i known they are trying to improve) but for ethical reasons too. I hate the way they aim their tat at children. my local mcd's held a bonny baby competition where the winning baby got a year supply of happy meals. mmm lovely weaning food! there are lots of other things i don't like about them,the book Fast Food Nation sums it all up nicely!

Did you know that the food is specially engineered so it pretty much dissolves in your mouth? That way you swallow it after about two chews. A vital part of digestion, which tells your brain that you've eaten and don't need any more, is smell and taste. So you swallow it really fast and end up still feeling hungry. That along with the M.S.G makes you think you need another one. And with them constantly telling you how tasty it is along with wanting another one you end up convinced. Cunning.
