Why is a 99 ice cream called a 99er

I think it's because they used to cost 99p when they first came out. They probably now cost much more but the popular name remains!

I can remember 99's in the early 1960's and they used to cost something like 1/6d Thats about 7.5p todays money

I don't know, but I remember going to buy one once from the van and I saw Mr Whippy lying dead on the floor covered in hundreds and thousands and chopped nuts. Police told me later that he topped himself.

I found the answer to my own question on the Cadbury site under the section "how do you name your products".The Monarchy in Italy has a speacially chosen guard of 99 men, subsequently any thing really special or 1st class was known as "99" and thats how the "99" flake for ice creams got its name

A 99 is called so because the words ice cream were abbreviated to IC which in roman numerals is equal to 99.
