Gas or Electric Oven
10 Answers
What is best - Gas or Electric ovens? Many cookery programmes seem to be using electric when I thought gas was quicker and got hotter.
I recently tried to buy a gas built in oven and found it incredibly difficult. 90% were electric. So what am I missing out on? Should I buy electric instead?

i always had gas hob and oven until we re-did our kitchen about 6 years ago. i now have electric fan oven and halogen hob, and most definitaly would not go back to gas for either. the oven is far quicker and more accurate than gas (which took a big of getting used to) and the hob comes up good as new with just a wipe over instead of all the fiddling with the bits necessary for a gas hob.
so i would say yes, buy electric.

Gas ovens are great IF you get a good one...otherwise i'd go for an electric fan-assisted oven.
Gas hobs are the best by far; the speed, reliability, and heat control is incomparable. But a gas oven will generally suffer from poor heat distribution, leaving cooler areas both at the bottom and towards the front of the oven.

In France , almost every cooker you see has a gas hob and an electric oven.(But what do they know?) Living there, I found it impossible to get both gas or both electric, either of which I innocently thought would be easier to get and have fitted. The gas hob is essential because it is quick and responsive. The electric oven can be cleaner and is a lot easier for makers to fit with a fan,for speed and even temperatures, pre-set timing and, for the ambitous, temperature controlling probes for use in large joints of meat and a rotisserie
