Which is best for making smoothies, a smoothie maker or a blender? T o my thinking a blender would do just as well as it does exactly the same job and then there is no need for the expense of paing for another piece of equipment to clutter up your kitchen.

Hmm it depends what kind of smoothie you want, a blender won't make actual juice out of things like carrots and apples, it will just turn them into mush. I think a juicer is too much hassle and a pain to clean though, I would just use fruit like grapes and bananas to makes smoothies. Frozen berries are good too.

idly_enjoys - Thanks, I should have been more explicit in my request. I don't intend to use any vegetables, I am only interested in using fruit of any kind along with milk, yoghurt, wheat germ (?), etc.
I use frozen mango.banana and lo-fat yogurt-either mango/pineapple or vanilla......I blitz it with a hand-held blender.Take 5min and little mess. You could also try raspberry or strawberry.
I use a cheapy smoothie maker and blitz things like milk, yoghurt, honey, berries, banana, grapes, mango, pineapple and kiwi.

In hindsight I would have bought just a handheld blender instead to save on clutter, but I use it a lot and it suits me. It is a pain to clean every day though.
I thought the same and bought a blender which was much cheaper than a smoothie maker. Although it did blend the fruit into a pulp, no matter how long I blended it for, it was always too thick to drink!

I bought a smoothie maker a couple of weeks later and it was much better as it make a proper "drink" out of the fruit rather than a "thick soup"

If you can only buy one, go for the smoothie maker as it can make thick or thin liquids, blenders (well mine anyway) only make thin ones
