Depends on the weather and whether I'm eating - for example, for me, on a hot summer's afternoon a nicely chilled sauvignon blanc will always beat a claret, which in turn would be much better with the roast beef on a cold winter's day.
Yes - there is a real qualitative difference at under 5, between 5 and 10 and then upwards. I personally can't really taste a huge difference once the retail price gets over about 30. In restaurants/hotels/bars etc then these prices could be doubled for a similar benchmark.
If they are advertised at half-price then they have to be - same rule as for sales of other goods in other shops.
But the important thing is that you enjoy what you drink - whatever colour or price bracket - and frankly, anyone else's opinion is just that... an opinion.

Personal preference, of course, but I'd go for above 5. The tax on wine is calculated by volume and it's high. So it doesn't matter whether you were buy the cheapest bottle you can find or some premier cru vintage at 100 a bottle that tax per standard bottle is the same.
Half price is a bit of a mystery.Half price of the price when, where, and for how long? It may be genuine enough, who knows? The underlying tax element is still the same.
If you are buying cheap, my experience has been that cheap white tastes comparatively worse than cheap red.

I normally prefer a red wine, but am partial to a nice chilled Chablis or Pinot Grigio. For years I struggled buying wine and ending up buying cheapish French wine that really wasn't very nice. Somehow, somewhere along the line, I set a guideline for my wine buying in that for everyday drinking I would not pay more than 5 a bottle, however I tend to only buy wine that is on special offer and that is now 5 so getting a better wine, this has worked and I haven't yet had a nasty wine. In fact I recently had a very nice Rioja and when I went back to get some more, I realised that it should have been 10 a bottle and that was why it was so nice. As I shop at the same supermarket each week, I can see that the price is genuinely half of their normal price, so don't feel I am being ripped off. I also tend to steer clear of French wines now, possibly as a result of having so many poor wines in the past. I also tend to stick to Merlot, Rioja, Tempranillo or Valpolicella as I I find some red wines give me very bad headaches because of the tannins.
we prefer italian red wines, although some french reds also go down well. the italian reds always seem softer and fruitier. for a nice white wine, i always enjoy a muscadet - sharp and lemony.
oddbins ownbrand red and white, in a screw top, are very good value at under a fiver (buy 6 save more, buy 12 save even more) and very, very drinkable.
we rarely spend more than a fiver on a bottle and always look out for special offers.

I used to drink only red wine but now prefer white as its easier to gulp down and doesnt give me as harsh a hangover as red does. Sainsbury's always have half price bottles on offer but I wonder how genuine this is. For example, Tesco currently sell Princes Tuna pack of 4 cans at "Half Price" for 1.99. I can tell you that this item certainly does not cost 3.99 RRP!
I like both red and white, it just depends on what mood I am in!
for white, after a lot of trying I have settled on Stowells Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, in Edinburgh we can get 3 bottles for a tenner at Iceland. It is great no hangover!!!
For red I like a Chasse du Pappe Cotes du Rhone.
As for the half price thing.. I think it is a lot of rubbish and you should just find a wine you like and watch out for it going on offer.
