Where did I go wrong?????

I heard that a chocolate cake mix, mixed with just a can of diet coke, makes the perfect cake. Mine turned out flat as a pancake!! Why oh why oh why?

In fact, being a little adventurous we tried Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper (we're in the U.S.) and even Root Beer... they all work superbly... no other ingredients needed. .. If you're using a box cake mix, be sure the Coke is room temperature and stir it thoroughly just before adding so as to make it as "fizzy" as possible. Don't over stir into the cake mix... just thoroughly mixed in. Put in oven before all the carbon dioxide dissipates (don't let it sit around long)...
However, for the dedicated baker, here's a recipe for a scratch cake and frosting:
Coca-Cola Cake
Preparation time: 25 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup Coca-Cola Classic
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup solid shortening, plus extra for greasing pan
3 heaping tablespoons cocoa (we like dark)
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups small marshmallows
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. (Fharenheit)
Sift sugar and flour into a mixing bowl. Set aside.
In a saucepan, blend the Coca-Cola, butter, shortening and cocoa, and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add to flour mixture. Add eggs and beat with mixer until blended. Add buttermilk, baking soda, vanilla and marshmallows. Mix well.
Bake in a greased 13- by 9-inch pan for 40 minutes. Spread frosting on warm cake. Cut into squares.
Yield: 12 to 18 servings.
