My next door neighbour is a single chap who smokes a lot of drugs. I can always smell it. No problem.
Today he brought about 6 big bags of ice & then a friend of his brought another 6 or so. They have been crushing it or something for quite a while, it's fairly noisy.
My question is, is it some sort of drug making "thing"?

In all seriousness, (deadly seriousness) the manufacture of illicit methamphetamines (are there any other kind) involves the use of large amounts of ice (don't ask for what), usually up to 50 pounds per batch, depending on the method of manufacture.

Here in the U.S., meth manufaturing has become rampant. I live in a rural western state and friends in law enforcement tell me that at least half of the old, abandoned farm and ranch buildings that dot the landscape from days gone by are used in this process. They also tell me that many people manufacturing the drug are killed or maimed each year due to the cooking producing terribly toxic fumes as well as explosians. Any house used for any length of time to cook the stuff is usually contaminated so badly that the house is condemned for human habitation... a thoroughly disgusting and dangerous enterprise, even to the unsuspecting neighbors...

Everything Clanad says about the manufacturer of methemphetamine is perfectly correct, except no ice is used that I'm aware of.

Ice can be used to condensate distillates for recapture and reuse (refluxing). These solvents (which can be used for instance to remove and isolate essential oils from cannabis material) typically have explosive potential, especially when handled by chemically induced 'chemists'. I believe I may have seen daylight between the roof and where it normally rests on the walls myself on occasion.

That's a lot of ice! They should at a minimum be warned to move their operation a safe distance away from people who prefer dealing with reality on its own terms rather than trying to fake it or escape from it.

At any rate, you should not be expected to put up with the potentially hazardous antics of people who by choice are not all there. You've obviously seen enough to be concerned and to act. Reality, there's or yours, will not be ignored indefinitely.

Self-defense is the preeminent human right. Your neighbors are not being cool.

mibn2cweus is more than likely on the right track, they are no doubt manufacturing cannabis oil by way of fairly crude
caveman methods. incorperarating the freon unit out of an old fridge would be a lot less labour intensive and far more discreet. also as he/she has stated there is a definite potential hazard.
