it is generally thought oranges came from india or vietnam, and were called 'na rangi' in sanskrit. this was transformed to 'an orange' in english. the original fruit (known as sour, bigarade or Seville orange) is bitter compared to the modern counterpart due to the slight acidity of the juice.
