Please can anyone help? Have you ever eaten white fish eg. haddock/hake where sometimes it tastes perfect and other times it tastes too strong as if it's off, even though you know it isn't. Someone told me that a male & female fish taste different. Is this true??? Thanks in advance for any input.

I don`t believe gender has a bearing on this. Fresh fish doesn`t` smell "fishy". Unfortunately, when buying filleted haddock, hake or cod off the slab you cannot prod the skin to see if it`s firm, inspect the gills under their covers to see if they`re pink or red, or see the eyes, which should be clear & bright. You pays your money & takes your chance with filleted. Try to buy fresh whole ones & learn how to fillet them yourself. Don`t be shy to ask for sniff!
