What;s the best method of making porridge? I'm a novice so at the moment my porridge is like cement when it comes out of the microwave. It's very stodgy. I use the microwave cos i have no time in the morning to stand over the hob!

are you measuring it properly? My Mum uses an egg-cup full of oats to 2 egg-cup of water or milk/water mix. plus one egg-cup of water at the end.

2 scoops oats + 5 scoops water/milk.
I read somewhere that once it's cooked how you like it, add a bit of cold milk.

This makes it easier to eat and, more importantly, stops it continuing to cook and going hard.

Also, transfer it to a new bowl or pan, or the heat from the first bowl or pan continues stiffening the porridge after you've finished cooking it.
correct quantities and pause the microwave every so often and stir and if you think its the right consistency, stop it even if your time isnt up. I do this every morning.
Are you sure its not. Can be an easy mistake to make. :-)
i make it in the microwave
2 cups of water to 1 cup of oats
stir a couple of times
when it looks solid enough put it in a bowl and add a cup of milk then mix and eat
1 porridge to 2 parts liquid is all you need to know hun.
Does any one here have salt and sugar on their porridge or am I just wierd?
Make it with milk and then add a blob of jam - and me a Scot as well!!

Even better, get one of the Quacker Oats bowls with the measures on the inside - put oats up to line one - add liquid up to line two and slam in the microwave for 4 minutes - job done.
tigerlily - sweet and sour porridge? Maybe youve got something there - I do like salted peanuts with ice-cream - could be the same principle.
I like peanut butter and jam sarnies.
Sorry Home we are digressing.
My son loves peanut butter and jam with honey and banana thrown on for good measure! My perosnal favourite is banana and HP sauce, but I wouldn't recommend it in porridge.
I always add twice amount of cold water to the oats and lit the gas under it and give a quick stir. It doesnt need much monitoring and is really quick - no more than a couple of minutes to boil and cook, serve with banana and dash of honey. If you want a dollop of yogurt plus fruits such as kiwi or strawberry is very nice. The results are much easier to control than inside a microwave.
