because it is a cake that is made from cheese.
if you have ever been to france,buy cheesecake and its got real cheese in it.i think when the brits coppied it they decided to go for a sweeter version and not include the cheese.the origanal tastes brill,try it,i know one of the big supermarkets sell it as it really should be.

I think the cheesecake we have in Britain does have cheese in it. Elsewhere in Europe they have cooked cheesecakes which are quite a different thing. Very nice though. (Is that what you had, Vinny100?) Don't both of them use curd cheese?
Cheesecake in the US is made from cream cheese or ricotta, mixed with eggs and sugar, and baked. I don't know what you have in the UK, but here the cheese is pretty obvious!
Ive got a receipe that makes a delicious strawberry cheesecake and it does include 60z of cream cheese, i use Philadelphia mmmm yummy i fell a spell in the kitchen coming on
