It really depends on how much you actually use the pestle and mortar at the moment.... If you use it every day for say 5 minutes to grind up your spices, or use it on a large scale basis for say catering, then it would definitely be worth having an electric one.... However, if (like me) you only occasionally grind up spices, then getting out the pestle and mortar is not too much like hard work. I do have a small electric coffee grinder that I keep just for spices but haven't used it in months (in fact I don't even know if it still works !). I tend to buy my spices ready ground from the local asian shops which have a high turnover, so they are very fresh anyway.

Thanks for the answer, & the correct spelling of pestle. Looks like I won't be putting that on my Xmas list.
LOL.... No, it wouldn't go on my list either ! (Not that I have one of them anyway hehe).

I think I'd rather receive an assortment of ready ground spices - in small quantities, including some expensive ones (like saffron, vanilla pods, nice quality stuff etc)
Remember that it will retain the aroma of previous spices!!!
I have had one for years....it always came in handy when I used to make a lot of curries.
Agree with Juggerling. I have an old Braun coffee grinder that works like a small twin-bladed blender. It grinds peppercorns in seconds for refilling up the big shaker I use when cooking.

Looks as though the hardly used bread maker will be all alone in the cupboard for some time to come.
