I bought some ready roasted chicken 3 days ago and put it in the fridge when it had gone cold. Will it still be ok to eat? Should I warm it up in the microwave or is it safest to eat cold IF it is ok to eat after 3 days?
I would eat it!
Next time, put it straight in the fridge if you're not planning to eat it - it's ok to put warm food in the fridge- the quicker you chill it the less time there is for bugs to multiply x
A couple of days is my maximum, Bath. I may be overly paranoid though! lol If cooked on a monday night, for example, I'd eat it until the wednesday, but not any more. But then, if I cook a chicken, there isn't much chance of any being left past 24 hours! lol
I work on the basis of "if it doesn't smell, taste a bit. If it tastes Ok, eat it". And I agree with Bathsheba - get it in the fridge asap, never mind if it is still warm.
Have you ever bought ready roasted cold chicken? Generally the use by date is much more than 3 days (although I take naff all notice of sell by/use by dates). I've never poisoned anyone yet.
It'll be fine, I keep mine longer than that sometimes and I'm still here! Tuck in and enjoy. How do you normally serve your roast chicken? I'm bored with the same salad, stir fry, curry and occasional with gravy offerings.
marinade strips of chicken (cooked or raw) in lemon juice, garlic and a bit of pesto. Cook some pasta. While pasta is cooking reheat/cook chicken mixture. Stir chicken into pasta with some more pesto and serve with parmesan.
or
Reheat chicken with a little oil, garlic, ginger and spring onions. Stir in a little curry powder. Whack in a load of yoghurt. Serve with noodles.
Its not chicken from supermarket but a takeout from Nando's! Only been in there for so long because I had far too much food in the fridge. I think I will go and eat it now.
Chicken is one of those foods that goes off easily and very obviously. If it smells OK then it will almost certainly taste OK.
I know it's different to chicken but I ate some steak that was ten days past its sell by date recently and it was absolutely beautiful. Probably better than if it had been eaten in date. It was actually starting to go brown.
I agree with barmaid, if it smells ok, tastes ok, it is ok.
My daughter won`t use anything that`s been in fridge for more than a day, for heaven`s sake what is a fridge for?
Mind you ,we don`t do badly out of it as she brings stuff to me that she won`t use. lol.
She`ll use a leg off a chicken, then bring the rest to me, why doesn`t she just buy a leg?
I used chicken that she brought me once for five days, cold for sandwiches etc. I wouldn`t like to warm it up.
I used to get them on a sunday or monday for samiches for during the week and would use it up to friday so long as I had enough, with only minor vomitting and diarrhoea(joking),I had no bother with it.
Hammer-Head - glad you enjoyed your steak. By rights it should be dark when you buy it anyway. The bright red stuff's been pumped full of water - and possibly dyes/preservatives, to keep it looking "fresh". You can usually go by smell anyway - but chicken? I wouldn't eat any that was more than a day old. It wouldn't last that long in our household anyway!
