My mother recently told me that eating prawns and ice cream at the same meal caused food poisoning. I've found no evidence to show this is true but she is adamant that she is right. Please - can anyone shine any light on this?

If both products are correctly served after being stored for the minimum length of time I can see no problem. I have eaten both at the same meal on many occasions and so far, I have not suffered from any stomach upset let alone food poisoning.
You get food poisoning by either ingesting bacteria or toxins from food. Seafood and Ice-cream are notorious if poorly prepared or stored. If each is free from toxins and bacteria, then you are at no risk. A bit of a silly diet however, and maybe exhibits something of a lifestyle that might be more exposed to food-poisoning. For example, people who tip out of the pub and gorge on kebabs that have been gently cultivating bugs and poisons are more likely to get food poisoning than somebody who stayed at home and cooked sprouts.
I've had both when eating out,no problems.

flobbergob, it is prawns and ice cream at the same meal, not on the same plate. I often have a starter involving seafood and ice cream is a fine dessert. I don't see how that equates with tipping out of the pub and gorging on kebabs.
Why would eating two things together suddenly make them harmful? Ok, so if you drink milk and eat an orange together, it gives you a bit of a stomach ache, but prawns and ice cream being toxic together....haha. Dear me.
