Hi - probably seems like a daft question - but does anyone know why the price of cucumbers has gone up by about 50p in a week?

Because they are out of season, probably.
Could be the weather, too cold to grow them.
I have noticed that too. Tesco are charging 1 !
Everything seems to be going up! I've been buying currants for the wild birds and Tesco have put them up this week to 2-59 from 1-79! Tesco are doing all these special offers but watch for other things going up by enormous amounts, they don't give away something for nothing!
My local green grocer told me yesterday that there was a bad crop and there's a major shortage of cucumbers... they didn't have any, he said the supermarkets have the monopoly on the few there are, and they are around 1.50 each now!!
Please stop shopping in Tesco's- they have far too much of a monopoly in the UK as it is!! Think Tesco vegetables are really naff anyhow!! Like the Co-Op for fruit + vegetables and they are really reasonable + they are an ethical supermarket too. Try to shop local- usually cheaper anyhow + stay away from Tesco- a swear word to my ears!! Maybe try growing you own- if you have space in your garden or if you have an allotment ,too- that way the carbon footprint is very low + it would probably taste far better anyhow :-) Good luck Redjean342! Ciao, Bea :-)
Got a cucumber last wk and it was so watery it went to mush yuck.

What is the best way to keep them?

I always try to go to Aldi and buy whatever they are doing for 59/69 p

Although did get some stuff from Asda

CrazyCathy :-) Pleased to hear that you do not shop at Tesco's that ghastly supermarket that am praying will crash like Goliath one day soon :-)- keep it up + try to encourage others to shop at Asda or any other supermarket or better still locally if possible !! Methinks it is always better to buy vegetables in their right season anyhow- for many reasons with taste being among them ;-)
Ciao, Beatrice :-)

Thanks for all your answers. Didn't think that anyone would bother replying!!

It's funny though, like someone has said, how things can rise so much from week to week! We're being ripped off! It's not very often things go down in price.
