In a large sauce pan into which youhave 2tblsp of oil heating, add 1tsp of brown mustard seeds, a piece of cinnamin and a pinch of dried chilli. When the mustard seeds start to pop add 1 onion-finely chopped,2 cloves of garlic-finely chopped....and 2tblsp grated ginger. Saute until the onion has softened. Add 1 tsp each of turmeric ,ground cumin and ground coriander. Stir all together until the spices are blended. Chop your sweet potatoes into chunks and add to the pan...cover with stock and let simmer until the potato is soft. Let cool slightly -then blitz with a hand blender.Add a bit of cream or coconut milk if wanted.

Hello pasta freak and Jack Daniels...
I feel a bit of a gooseberry butting into your online relationship, but I'm very interested in your "soup kitchen" and how you manage to produce a 3course meal for 1.25!!
My request for recipe was for our church cafe, to which I donate pots of soup and am always looking for something a wee bit different. Having got a bargain of 3kgs. of sweet potatoes, I'm desperate to use them.
Thanks for help and hope to get some of your thrifty tips. Are you a professional chef or cook??

Hi 4winds....sorry for butting into your thread yesterday...I always have to have a quick natter when I see jack as she is not about that much.
Glad you liked the soup...it really was just off the top of my head...I will have to try it now!
I work as a part time cook for a homeless charity drop-in centre. We charge 1 for lunch.....and 1.25 for a cooked breakfast. ...and that is only so that the clients know that it is not a free ride. Almost all the food we use is donated tins and packets.......As we are a charity, there is no need to make a profit.
Sorry to rabbit on......

Hello again pasta and jack
I hope you didn't take my "gooseberry" comment too seriously - I actually like all the chatty remarks and information.
I'm a fairly new AB fan, having stumled upon it looking for crossword help, then realised what a mine of information it was !!
I wish you well with your charity efforts, pasta . Our church cafe was set up as an outreach to the wider community and is frequented by lots of elderly people who see it as a meeting place . We make a profit because all the soup and a lot of the home baking is donated, so we have been ablr to give money to the local cancer charities as well as the church. And it keeps me out of mischief!!

Hello pastafreak
It's really nice to have total strangers help you out when you have a question or a problem, although I'm beginning to feel that I'm getting to know a lot of people ("cyberpals" my grandchildren call them), so they're not so"strange" now.
Re charity I don't imagine I do any more than most folk, and certainly a heck of a lot less now due to age and various infirmities----but I can still make soup!!
Hope to meet you and jackdaniels some other time in cyberspace.
(I confess I thought jd was male, hence my facetious remark about your online "relationship" !!)
