I read an article the other week suggesting that many of the health problems we have in Scotland - in particular the high incidence of MS, could be related to vitamin D defficiency due to the lack of sunlight we have in the winters, not only the shorter days, but the fact that we see very little sunshine even during daylight. The article also said that they were lobbying the government in order that this should be raised higher on the health priorities in Scotland. I think that in order to stay healthy, we need at least 15 minutes of sunlight a day.
