Sure he doesn't do it. I would guess that you weren't personally involved in the Abu Ghraib scandal either, nor are people that make jokes about it. That makes no difference in how offensive the joke is. Women are beaten by their partners all the time - how is that any less real than Abu Ghraib?
The reason I find this an inappropriate topic to joke about is precisely because so many women are abused by their husbands. A full third of women get abused at some point. And often they can't escape from the situation, either because their partners are controlling, or they have no money of their own, etc. It's a terrible situation to be in, and it's terrible that it's so widespread. Clearly, there are a lot of men who really don't have a problem with hitting women. When someone just throws off a joke about it, I get angry because it demonstrates a lack of concern about real women who really get abused.
