i always love a nice st emillion chardonnay, usually south eastern australia. Can't beat a chilled glass or two of that.  Banrock Station are good, as is Harveys (I think)  . Has a koala and a stamp on the label.  For reds, try a Merlot or Fetzer; nice classic taste.
i like the german white spatlese.and blue nun..i dont like dry wine and these are both middle of the road and are very palateable...i also like the wine i make myself as i can adjust the sweetness on that,,if you are looking for wine gifts the supermarkets allways have an offer on of cava this time of the year its okay for xmas gifts...and to have with meals..mullein

If you like Red - Tempranillo, a Spanish red is a very smooth and affordable wine. I prefer red and find some of the New World reds a little heavy.

Dry white wines from the Clare Valley in South Australia can't be beaten - Annie's Lane chardonnay, or Pike's riesling. For reds I love Annie's Lane shiraz or merlot.

Penfold's Grange if you are buying, Penfold's Bin 28 if I am
Chablis a white Burgundy or a good Port wine.

Chateauneuf du Pape - red is very nice.

Spanish

Anything by TORRES and you cannot go wrong...... .
They make great brandy as well............

If you're buying gifts go for something that little bit more special than your bog-standard (though highly drinkable) australian semillon or cab-shiraz.

For reds look to things like Margaux, or a Gran Reserva Rioja.

For whites look at 1er Cru Chablis, St Veran or even a quality champage!

White Cloud New Zealand private bin. Really nice at 3-4 deg C!!
I'm not fussy, anything wet and over 11% does me
Malcom Gluck does a great book on superplonk - value wines at reasonable prices.  Buy the book and a value wine as combined presents.

I can't actually believe that mullein actually said they like BLUE NUN! bit of an essex girls cheapo wine is blue nun! lol!

cant beat a good rose wine called white grenache, i know its not red or white but its lovely!

For a gift I found in Hawaii the best Rasberry dessert wine for over cakes and icecream also there hawaiian pineapple wine is sweet but good . This is from the only winery on maui called Tedeschi Vineyards. There site is www.mauiwine.com. Each bottle has a different hand desined lable too by local artists.
a good red Rioja is always lovely, as is a good quality Claret.  I like Sancerre white, and St Emillion too.
i tend to pick wines that have cool labels - it hasn't failed me yet even though wine loving mates tell me off for it!
Hardys Crest for white and Wolf Blass for red......cheers!
Depends what Im spending, if on a budget I always go for new world wines. Favourites at the moment are Wolf Blass and McGuigun Tempus Two.
If I were splashing out then I would go for
France - Hermitage, Chateauneuf du Pape, Nuit St Georges, Spain Gran Reserva Rioja, Italy Chianti

White - Australian chardonnay

Red - Spanish rioja

If anyone hasn't tried Rosemount Estates Shiraz and Cabernet Merlot, then I strongly suggest that you buy a botle of each.  Absloutely gorgeous!!  I don't like white, sorry, so I'm in no position to recommend any of them.
