Food combination No-nos
44 Answers
We were talking this morning about things that people won't put together. My mum had a thing about never serving tomatoes or peas with fried or poached eggs and suggest fish and chips with baked beans and her withering scorn had to be heard to be believed, so we all grew up believing it; it came as a shock when we found others do. On the other hand she would quite happily dish up tripe and onions with chips.
Do other families have family taboos or strange combinations of their own, like that?

Must be a regional thing... my mate lives in Norwich and her local chippy doesn't even DO gravy... wtf is that all about? Everybody eats chips and gravy!!!

My mum did a MINT burnt paella - you know the vesta paella in the packet... yet somehow just burn it so it was actually edible.
Oh fab days!
Other than that there were no cookery tips... they came from my Grandma and Auntie... however I unfortunately never listened... so missed out on good honest cooking tips (apart from the fact that generation seemed to cool vegetables beyond recognition)

when I was at school, we used to go to the chippy for dinner and have:
"a chip and gravy barmcake with 2 onion rings"
it cost 25p and was bl00dy marvelous. The lady was so skillful at putting just the right amount of gravy on - so that the onion rings were still crispy but the chips were starting to get soggy.
I have tried many times to recreate this masterpiece, but it never tastes the same!
I would never eat chicken and eggs in the same meal - it seems so wrong.
