Painkiller addiction

Can anybody tell me why somebody would get addicted to painkillers (unless of course they were in pain and these stopped that pain)? What effect do painkillers give you so you want to continue taking them?

Thank you, a very good article. I've never taken codeine so didn't know the well-being effect it can give you, I just thought it relieved pain.

When I had a bad back and was taking paracetamol and ibruprofen I took them long after the back was better, because the pain had been so bad I was scared not to take them in case it was still bad, if you see what I mean.
