I've bought some baking powder but it doesn't say how to use it.
Do i add it to the flour or take some flour out? And how much should I use?
thank you

Hi crisgal,
are you using plain or self raising flour ?

i use self raising - usually shop's own as i'm on a tight budget, and i know not to handle the dough - i hardly touch it!
What's your recipe ingredients crisgal?
Here's the quantities I use crisgal
for a fruit scone round, though you could make them in to individual scones!
8oz self raising flour
3ozs sugar
pinch of salt
3oz dried fruit
1/4 pint of milk
Question Author
8oz SR flour
2oz marg
1oz sugar
little milk
Sorry, I left out the butter! 2oz of butter! x
Try those quantities crisgal x
Question Author
it seems to be basically the same recipe though, apart from more sugar, doesn't it? x
Are you using 1/4 pint of milk?
crisgal, check the flour is in date too! If it's past its sell by date the raising agent in the flour may not work x
Question Author
well i've done loads now
some with sr and baking powder
some with plain and baking
some upside down
some with milk
some with water
some cut thinner and doubled up
and some cut very thick!

I'll let you know what happens...........
isn't there supposed to be egg as well?
Question Author
i do have recipe using egg, JD, it's for 'rich scones'. I've tried that too - and they don't rise either!

I am now looking at my scones. The ones that were upside down rose the most, but fell to the sie. Apart from that, there really isn't any noticeable difference between them all!

I think they taste a little lighter though.
When you cut the dough with the cutter, don't twist the cutter as you put it, or take out of the dough.
This was a top-tip from Gary Rhodes.
Give up and buy scones from Sainsbugs
Question Author
i don't twist the cutter! I've come to accept the fact that it is indeed, just me. -sigh-
