When using biscuits to join wood do you have to use glue or can they be used dry?

Jointing biscuits are compressed by squeezing them flat underconsiderable pressure. Applying a water-based glue (such as PVA woodworking glue) causes them to swell, thus making sure of a really tight joint. They're not designed to be used dry.
I like to dunk mine into a pot of tea first, that gets 'em wet, lol.
