Someone who has never had, or rarely has, an alcoholic drink will feel the effect of one glass of wine, whereas if they then start having one every day they will soon cope with it, but a second glass may have en effect, and so on.
Second is the body size of the person - the larger you are the more alcohol your body can handle.
Third is whether you pace your drinking. Three glasses of wine drunk over a 2 hour long dinner, interspersed with glasses of water can be handled better than 3 glasses gulped in 15 minutes.
Another factor is some people exagerate the amount of booze they have. Just because someone says they had 16 pints of strong lager doesn;t mean they really did.
For me - I drink wine - the pleasure of the drink isn;t the alcohol but the flavour and the whole experience. I know my limit and don't exceed it.
