if you google on "stollen recipe", there are loads..not sure about cheap though, if it contains all the fruit, butter and almond paste that it is supposed to.
Cheat!  Stollen are BOGOF in Sainsbury's at the moment!

Noddy, thanks for the excellent tip, but I was looking more for a recipe to make with my students, so I needed a rich fruit cake that was cheap to make from scratch. I also was hoping for a tried and tested recipe, rather than searching recipe sites. Thank you all for your ideas.

Oops sorry food_techie!

Have found this which makes two stollen loaves so it works out pretty reasonably I would think -

Oh heck  - it's going to make the page wide!!

Thanks Noddy, I'll give it a go.
I had to bake lots of fruit cake for a fete, and used tesco value mixed fruit.  Sounds fairly horrid, but was actually brilliant and would use for myself!
It's not 100% relevant I know but for anyone that likes panettone, Tescos are doing one of the best panettones I've ever had and for only 8 for a kilo panettone! That is half the price of an equal quality one from a delicatessen! It has hazelnut sugar coating on the top, it is fantastic!
