which enables you to tell when an avocado is just ripe ?

So often we buy them, only to find that although the flesh indicates that they're ready for eating, they are completely black inside and inedible. If we buy them hard and store them in the fruit bowl for a couple of days, they still seem to die almost overnight,

some supermarkets sell them 'ripe and ready to eat'. I've found Waitrose tend to get this right, Sainsburys and Tescos less so.
whether this is tech right or not its how my mum taught me and its always worked, look for ones with a bit of stalk still attached and gently squeeze the end, if it has a little give in it its nearly ripe, take home and leave overnight and will be fine next day.

or as jno says go for the ripe n ready ones!

my best tried and tested method is get up walk outside to tree and pick one that feels good, but a bit tricky over here!
If you bought them that day and they're black inside, take them back to the shop and kick up a stink.
I think storing them at too cold a temp is what causes them to go black....and most of the supermarkets do this.
I buy them when hard and put in fruit basket in the kitchen and they are perfect about 10 days later.
