i have found a jar of black molasses in the back of my cupboard. I bought it last year, from a bargain shelf, as it intrigued me! I forgot all about it until now, and have no idea what to do with it! Is it the same as black treacle?
thank you!

I like to lick the raw molasses. To much is no good though, it sends me to the bathroom.
Try mixing half and half of the molasses with any good table syrup used for pancakes. I realize the concept of flapjacks or pancakes is different in Britain than here in the U.S., but for a treat try this recipe:

1 egg
1 cup flour
3/4 cup milk ( I usually add a bit more to my desired consistency)
2 Tablespoons oil
1 Tablespoon sugar (a little more doesn't hurt and makes them brown better)
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS:

Mix your dry ingredients together, then add in your wet ingredients. Mix until smooth and to desired consistency, thickishly pourable.... (A few lumps is Ok though) I pour into a measuring cup I have with a pour spout but you can use whatever. Pour out onto semi-hot griddle about 4 to 5 inches in diameter; not too hot or the middle of your pancakes won’t cook through. When it’s bubbled up on one side, flip! Serve with the molasses syrup described earlier...
When I read how good molasses is - iron, calcium, potassium etc I decided to use some. Like yours it has been sitting in my cupboard doing nothing. Today I made my usual porridge with a bit of plain yogurt and sliced banana and put a teaspoon of molasses on top. It melted down into the porridge and was sooooo tasty.
IIRC Jamie Oliver used some in the baked beans he was making, in the TV prog over the weekend. Maybe you could check out his recipe ?
Have a dessert spoonful daily to build up antibodies. Especially good for children in winter & expectant mothers.
Any chance of making the old fashioned toffee Callard & Bowser produced before they went out of business? Let me know if you market some on ebay.
