I don't know which subject to post this under but maybe some electrical repairer might know the answer. My three year old frost free fridge freezer has suddenly started making a lot of rattling noise and when I open the fridge door I can hear that it is the fan. I can hear it slow down and stop. This is a Bosch model KGN 39V 00GB. I can't afford the £85 call out cost if it is something I can do myself. At the back of the fridge section, inside is a plastic cover which can be removed. I know this because after I had had it delivered I had to call out a Bosch engineer who removed it and used double sided sticky tape to fix it back in place. This had been omitted by the manufacturers thus the fridge compartment was far too cold and ruined all the salad food and froze everything else. I think these are probably badly assembled.

does the noise stop when you open the freezer door?

it could be as simple as some packaging being trapped in the fan (having found the same myself with virtually the same FF as yours).

Thanks Sara for replying so promptly. It is definitely not the stuff inside that is causing the noise. It is the fan which can still be heard whirring (noisily) when I open the door but slowing down to a stop.

How did yours get sorted out? Did someone remove the plastic cover inside the back of the fridge? When I saw how rubbishly made they were I was shocked at Bosch. I thought they were a good manufacturer
sorry, can't help then!

if it's any consolation I've been paying about £80 a year for a coverplan, and not needed them.. so I've blown more money than you will ;o)
This isn't the 'frizer that kept shouting' which caused much amusement on here a few weeks ago, is it?
no, I realised that when I opened the door the fan slowed to a stop (as it should), and the noise stopped. when I closed the door it was pushing a bit of a box into the fan.

not v exciting really, but it's happened a couple of times.

Even scarier, now (after three of four noisy days) there is silence even when I turn the cold control up to the highest. ie the fan does not even come on. I have got a fridge thermometer so will have to see if it warms up. The light is on so it is not electrical.

Thanks Sara. My fan is behind this cover so cannot be affected by the contents. I have never taken out a cover plan as over many years I would have paid out thousands altogether for all my appliances, none of which has required attention (until now).
There is an air circulation fan that is supposed to stop running when you open the door (after a few seconds) on most types now.
I would suspect that a valve may need changing, and/ or the fan. If a valve, you cannot do this yourself as the refrigerant has to be exhausted and captured, a new valve usually soldered in and then recharged.
Best for you is to take out a maintenance contract which you can have for one year, and pay for that.

Thanks for your advice Alf. I think the fan is catching on something and I intend to take this plastic cover off and have a look.
I suppose it could be the fan loose on the shaft, too .. You will need to take fan out if this is the case. There is usually a small grub screw, or allen screw securing it in position. You can try to tighten.
Getting fan out is going to be your only problem.

Thanks Alf, you seem to know a bit more about it. Am I right - ie is the fan located in the inside of the fridge section at the back which is covered by a removable plastic cover which also has the temperature adjuster dial on it?
Had a similar sounding problem myself. The back of freezer was where my problems where, according to the wonderful repair man who showed OH how to repair,it was caused by frost/icebergs building up around the fan!You would not belive the size of the build up.Unfortunately it was not just a case of unscrew one thing and there you go,but going by my experience I would try a local repair person who offers 'no fix no fee'Yes,you may have to pay about 80 quid but it is cheaper than a new freezer and ours needs tending to every 4-5 months.
Things aint made like they used to!-or rubbish luck in my case
mine is a Hoover self-defrost that does the same occasionally, particularly when its chocablok
If I get this answer in on time I'll have all the answers in the top box. I might take a pic and figure out how to upload it too! :)

My fridge freezer is still rattling loudly and it is coming from an (unseen) fan. It is nothing in the fridge compartment that is making the noise. Because it is a frost free model there should never be any ice build up.
What there should be and what is are 2 completely different matters. My hotpoint made so much noise it had to be switched off at the wall at night till the freezer problem was sorted. The cover at the back does not look like it comes off,but that little bug was covering the fan, which despite being in a frost free freezer, had iced up.I was told only to put boxes in the top compartment as bags can 'cover' on the air vent/intake
