Does a true ceasar salad contain anchovies? I know there could be a little essence in the sauce, but I once had one containing pieces of the horrible things and now I worry about ordering it.In fact, when I went to Paris for my honeymoon, the first thing I looked for in the phrase book was "sans anchoise"!

Yes, as a rule, authentic Caesar salad has anchovies.  You are apparently not alone in your dislike, as most restaurants I've been to in the past year or so ask me when I order one "with or without anchovies?"  (PS  Me, I love the little fishies, but I'm the only one in my family, or within my circle of acquaintances, that does!)

Yes, i think they also get wizzed up in the dressing but you wouldnt even have known they were there if i hadnt just told you! I love them!!

In order to add some sanity and balance to this thread - I hate the little sods. Don't know where the idea came from that they are edible. Just 'cause they don't kill you, doesn't mean they should be eaten. I'd rather frolic naked with Anne Widdicome & Jackie Stallone than eat those smelly little beggers again.

No anchovies in a Caesar salad. The one with anchovies (yum, yum) is a salad Nicoise.
