I'm not being flippant! If you're after a puree-like consistency etc., or where very large quantities are involved, then a food processor is invaluable.
Otherwise, I find a good quality knife serves the purpose. I use a professional Wusthof Trident 10" cooks knife. It's great for slicing, fine chopping, squashing and crushing (using the flat of the blade) - I even use it to peel spuds, preferring it to a paring knife or peeler !!.
I can do most things with this quicker than an electric chopping device - and that's without the time it takes to dig out your chopping machine from behind the bread maker / pasta machine / fondue-set at the back of your cupboard, and of course, all the hassle of washing-up the awkward shaped parts afterwards.
I must agree with brachiopod. Over the years I have bought mini-choppers, wonder this and that, ideal for small amounts, nuts etc.
The charity shops loved to see me, until I came to my senses and invested in a solid wood chopping block, and a cleaver - like knife. Get one that is perfectly balanced and feels right to you, as there are many to choose from. My favourite is part of a Judge Sabatier set, but I also have ones that have been bought singly.
