What *is* a crumpet?

Ridiculous question I know..

What is a crumpet? I mean, it's made out of bread, but isn't fully baked, you can't eat them raw...

The best I can come up with is that it's a 'par baked aerated muffin'. How are they made? Anyone? Does anyone know?
