hi piggy, this question just made me chuckle! i tried this one a couple of years ago, one of the staff ran after us unfortunately!
I hope not, otherwise it's just another form of theft, not very nice for the staff that served you.
the staff dont do a bunk when I cut their hair - they give me free meals..... :)

growing up in Market Rasen, there was a famous 'story' about two of the local idiots trying it and getting stopped at the door, one of them tried to fake a heart attack, whislt the other said it was the curry that had brought it on, and unless they phoned an ambulance they would be done for murder, the staff dialed 999 but asked for the police, it made the rasen mail.
I think the myth about "doing a runner" from Indian restaurants is just that ...

... a myth.
jayne lots of people did it years ago, that is why black cabs have a lock on their doors, it is to stop people running off and not paying.
Oh.
My Dad did it. He came to England for 'a holiday' when he was 16 and done a runner from an indian. I think there was only one in town then.
Lot's of people have "runners" when they go to our local Indian JJ.
not me , may i add
Oh, Mousey ... Purleeeeze !

I'm from Brum and can confirm it's basically a rites of passage into adulthood in this neck of the woods .... obviously Brighton is far to cosmopolitan and cultured to indulge .. :-)

thanx captain, i used to enjoy watching the bunk, dont actually remember doing myself. it just seemed very funny at the time. i can clearly remember walking through bearwood one night and seeing a couple quickly leave an indian place, jump in their car, do a three point turn and quickly drive away, at the same time i could see two indain waiters running outside trying to get their attention. many a time you´d see a couple sitting near the exit door preparing to get that moment when the coast was clear to leg it.
funny times, it was west midlands thing i think
Another little ruse was to wait until another table had paid cash and left it on the table, then nick the cash from their table and use it to pay the bill!
The old scam was to chat to some hungry looking person and offer to buy them a meal.
Order a slap up meal for the two of you and when finished say to the guy I've got to leave now but I'll pay at the desk. When you get to the desk you say to the cashier "My friend back there is paying" You wave to him and when he waves back you say "That's him".
I've never done it myself though.
