Fluctuating readings of blood sugar
5 Answers
I am type 2 and take tablets and insulin. I am often caught out by a very low reading, giving me a hypo which takes a day or so to get over. Yet the next day could have a very high reading which is just as worrying. I eat regular and sensibly. Any clues why it moves arouns so much?

there is something called brittle diabetes, usually associated with type 1 i think, which causes unexplained fluctuations in blood sugar. maybe you need to see the specialist and put your concerns to him and see what can be done. as you're probably aware, everyones diabetes is different so it's very difficult for someone here to really be able to help a great deal. good luck :)

I've been a diabetic for many years and I think I can safely say we've all been through the 'fluctuating' problem sooner or later. It takes quite a while to get under control.
When you say it takes a day to get over a hypo? It should take no longer than an hour. You must test your blood on a regular basis, if its showing a bit low (4) eat a couple of biscuits, you should always carry some with you just in case, or suck a couple of glucose tabs. Don't worry about being a bit high, its being low thats dangerous.
Hope all is well soon. Jem

I can't answer your question directly but I'd urge you not to worry too much.
My blood sugar levels have been all over the place for years. (I've given up on being tested for diabetes because they kept telling me I'm not diabetic but then telling me to go for another test!). 2.1 is a typical figure for me but my blood sugar level can suddenly jump to over 8 for no apparent reason. That's been happening for over 40 years but I'm still here and I'm still healthy. Don't let numbers scare you!
