any good suggestions for a party theme? It's me and my husband's joint "forty and a half"th birthday in the summer and we want to throw a family party. I've heard of things like "something begining with p parties" "black tie and diamonds" "tarts and vicars" etc - has anyone been to a party with a good or unusual theme?

How about a 'T' party - everyone has to dress as something beginning with T.
How about fancy dress from the decade in which you were both born?
A beach party if it's in the Summer?
Yes, I was going to say Hawaain (sp?) where the men wear the shirts (hmm..) and the women wear grass hula skirts (wahay!)
Why not have an old fashioned 1950s/1960s style birthday party like you went to as children? Party games, dancing and jelly and icecream?
Cowboys/Cowgirls & Indians is always a good one!
You could have an Olympic theme where everyone choses to wear an outfit from (or similar to) any sport or event. Can range from Beach Volleyball to Sailing.
In college I had a "half birthday" party and served half a cake, etc.

Most guests didn't do anything special, but one fellow came half dressed -- not top to bottom half, but left to right half!
He tucked one sleeve inside the other, one trouser leg inside the other, and held it all modestly in place with tape!

Tramps & tarts

vicars & tarts

Uniform - plenty of scope!

Schooldays/toys

Rustic (complete with zider, bread & cheese, bales to sit on)

Colour eg red - serve bloody marys, wear red clothes etc

Eastern promise - come as slave girls, slave traders

Hippy/60s/flower power

Cubs & brownies

Disguise (I went to this one as my bearded husband, & he went as me!)

Famous people

Characters from books/films

One particular book or film eg Sound of Music - plenty of scope.

That should give you plenty to think about! Personally I find the best parties have a theme that can be continued in the food, decorations (very important) etc not just in how people are dressed.

Once went to a 'kids TV party' where everyone dressed up as characters from a kids tv show (past or present).

Or how about Mexican? Make cacti out of big cardboard boxes, mexican food (and drink) ....................

Is it just me, or could Solarjunkie's list also double up as a porn category directory?

OK not the Cubs & Brownies one.

And perhaps not the Sound of Music one, either.

Actually...

Song Title Party...everyone dresses up in a costume that represents a song title.  Ideas can be as basic as carrying a small tray with a teapot and two cups ("Tea for Two"), or someone who smokes could simply be "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."  The more eclectic the better, and it would be a challenge for everyone's titles to be identified.
The best one I went to was a bad taste party...we had to wear the worst mismatched clothes we could find..the charity shops made a fortune .. hair as scruffy as possible with all various colour sprays in..and for the women, make up as over the top as you could get it.  It was great as you didnt have to worry about looking good as the worse you looked the better.
We had a movies theme party a couple of years ago. Come as your favourite film star & then have mini oscars for best/worst dressed, best drama queen etc.
Heroes and villains was a good one I went to, also "when the ship went down"which covers everything from maids' uniforms to balldresses etc!

Have a sexual problem party!

"I've come as a premature ejaculation!"
"No, you're just in your underwear."
"Yes, I've come in my pants."

Indie Singer I think you have serious issues ;o)
