Vigorously ...
i never bother, boiling it gets rid of any bacteria anyway.
It depends on the rice. I don`t with American long grain but I would do about 5 changes of water with washing basmati.

Bacteria ?

I thought you rinsed it to get some of the starch out.

Or ... maybe you shouldn't ?
I always rinse several times to remove the starch ... nothing at all to do with bacteria.
It's supposed to get rid of surplus starch, but to be quite honest I found it to be too much of a faff. Boil it, then rinse it afterwards.
i suppose, if you rinse as much of the starch off as you can, it will not be so sticky once cooked, depends how you like it i guess.
Yes.

Oh, golly ... I don't know what mine is.

It came in a huuuuuge sack, from Costco.

Hang on ... I'll check ...
i always rinse after to get the starch out
''Boil it, then rinse it afterwards''

Nooo. If you cook it correctly you shouldn't have to rinse/drain it...
I rinse it unless i'm doing rissoto.

Basmati, apparently.
use tilda rice, no rinsing and no faffing, always perfect.
I can never cook basmati well. Even when I`ve washed it. it ends up glutenous. That`s why I do American long grain. It`s harder to cock it up. Course, proper way is to steam it in a rice steamer like the chinese do.

I like it fluffy, not starchy, so maybe I'll rinse.

It's to go with my home made curry.

Recipe for JJ's home made curry.

1. Chicken

2. Jar of Patak's pasanda sauce

3. Mix together
boiling kills most grollys in it but rinsing removes a lot starch & scum
Jayne... it'll end in tears... step away from the kitchen immediately...
Agreed Snags, but you should not have to rinse it before either. I never rinse basmati, just keep an eye on it and have never found it too starchy after cooking.
You can get a Schwartz pilau rice seasoning. If you chuck in a clove and a couple of cardamom pods you can make an ok pilau rice (better if you fry it with the spices after boiling)
