Sydney - cheap & cheerful place to stay..any suggestions??

My friend is going to Sydney with her 2 kids and wondered if anyone knows of cheap and cheerful places too stay??
Also any travel tips or things to know when she gets there?

Reviews of the Haven Inn are a bit varied but, as I read most of them, as long as you expect 'cheap and cheerful' (and not 'the Ritz for peanuts') it might well meet your friend's needs:

When Mr Spudqueen and I went to Hong Kong with our two kids we rented an apartment as it was a lot cheaper than the four of us staying in a hotel. Maybe your friend could look into that.
