why waste food

who can understand all the waste food they were on about just a few days after Christmas? for goodness sake, things like sprouts, parsnips and carrots keep for ages, I have a stalk of sprouts hanging on my shed (so the cats can't spray them) and they are as fresh as when i first got them two weeks ago there is no way they will be chucked out, and the remains of the turkey will be finished up today, its time there were a campaign to put a stop to all that, instead of telling people not to eat things after a certain date why not advise what can be done with it up to that date?

I throw as little as possible away and grumble like mad when the kids waste anything. My waste food bin is empty except for thin cardboard which we are also allowed to save. I sometimes have to throw milk away but that is because the kids have messed it up by dipping biscuits in it and then not considered it worth drinking. If I could think of some way of using it I would. Everything else gets frozen or made into stir-fry or bubble and squeak. I was brought up in a household that had no money and could not afford to waste anything and for me it became a habit.

pinki - I bet you felt awful, but that meat could only have been a couple of days old at most. Why didn't you keep it to eat later? we've just had turkey risotto to use up the last bits. I couldn't bear (or afford) to throw away perfectly edible food.
If any veg is really shrivelly then (as with all our peelings etc) we put it in our compost bin. Gives you enough compost in the spring for pot plants (or indeed for growing your own strawberries or a runner bean on a balcony!). Otherwise - pop the unused stuff in the freezer, make curries, the ham could have been sandwiches!

Well - I know some disagree with me, but our turkey and beef has been in the fridge on a pretty cold setting, and some ham, since Christmas Eve when I cooked it, and it still tastes lovely. As long as you make sure to heat it through thoroughly before it's eaten, you should have no problems. It's when it's at room temperature that the problems arise...!

pinki-if you'd frozen all that meat immediately-or even within a couple of days-it would keep indefinitely. I posted a link the other day about basic freezing of meats. I see if I can find it. And the turkey carcass would have made a lovely stock...simmer-add some veg,and purée. Voilà!-a yummy cream soup.
