have you not been told by your diabetes specialist nurse or dietician to avoid special 'diabetic' foods? the carb content still has to be counted and some of the sweeteners in them can cause loose bowels, and as you've found out, they can be very expensive.
you can usually buy low sugar jams, etc., in the normal ranges held by supermarkets. if you want to make a cake, just reduce the amount of sugar you use and only have a small piece of the cooked cake. and just have a little of any ordinary chocolate bar you fancy, and eat it after a meal.
have a look at diabetes uk website and see what they recommend.

I totally agree with ethandron, my hubby has been a diabetic for over 25 years, go and talk to your diabetic specialist nurse they wont tell you to spend out on specialist foods, when I make a cake for him [ not often] I use fractose natural sugar and half the amount in the recipe and its more or less same price as ordinary sugar, basically he can have small amounts of most food "forbidden" items.Join Diabets UK, their magazine is very helpful and will be sent to you at regular intervals.Lots of items at your local supermaket are sugar free or state low sugar and to tempt off deserts make a fresh fruit salad and leave some in the fridge. Its a bit confusing at first, so much well meaning advice but after a while you wont worry as much.
hi all, thanks for your help and advice
but im not diabetic - im doing a low carb diet similar to the atkins - and ive just noticed that the low or no sugar vareties in supermarkets are few and hard to find....and wondered if someone had made and online shop or something that had all these varieties together...or with a list of normal every day foods that have low carbs
