For around £25-£30. The relative in question likes fine whiskey, but it is a regular birthday not a special one so not going OTT. Anything other than Glenfiddich/GlenMorangie, something a bit different perhaps?

I hope this discussion about Jack Daniels is helping you narrow down your choice of a single malt, jd.

It certainly is. And they're both blends anyway, not single malts...

Yeah I know! Was some good feedback early in the discussion so thanks all.
A bit more info-from wiki...
"Tennessee whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal in large wooden vats prior to aging, unlike the process used to make Kentucky bourbon.[8] Tennessee whiskey is not bourbon whiskey, as defined by Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 1, Part 5, Section 5.22.[9]"
when we are talking good malts, lets not forget ovaltine!
Ahaah ... well, there ya go !

So ... it's the charcoal filtering ???
*sugar maple* charcoal....so not just any old.....
Tere's a nice Speyside malt called Cardhu, runs at about £30 for a 12 year old
Well, no ... not just "any old".

I have a bottle of JD ... I'm tempted to have one ...

... but ... not all THAT tempted.
Yay ... "Ding" dinner is done ... woo hooo !
I agree with Scotman, and he should know, Highland Park is my preferred malt, and my preferred blended is Whyte and MacKay
Laphroaig Quarter Cask is my favourite at the moment. Highland Park is excellent too...
This is a shop I always check out when I'm in Nottingham, tthe staff are always helpfull and most of them know quite a lot about Whiskeys. Obviously you may be too far away to visit in person but the link will give you some ides of the range and prices

What an extraordinary coincidence paddywak, my uncle for whom the whisky will be for, used to live in Stapleford nr Nottingham until 3 months ago, I bet he knew of the shop in question!!
Bunnahabhain 12 year old - it's a wee bit over the £30 mark, but I have it on good authority it's well worth it.

Ther's one Whisky in Nottingham that's selling for just under £2000.00!

You would take that to a BYO party would you? Or would you?

Macallan 1926 perhaps - just googled it as most expensive bottle ever!
We got him a really expensive one for his 50th, well my dad did forget the name, but was over £100 (he promised to make it last). This is his 51st birthday, so not especially important compared to last year. So your suggestions at the £30 mark will be considered - thanks
I always used to love Laphroaig too (when I was a drinker) or Talisker is similar but less common.
Bowmore or Laphroaig, both exceptional single Islay malts in my opinion, or Ardbeg if you don't mid paying a little more.

Dave.
