But their mother stopped me making them because she wasn't a good cook and it showed he up....she didn't tell me in person but the hint got...

Your icing is too thick.

i thought that so have made extra thin fondant seriously not going to get any thinner... do i apply in sections or all over? what do i use to adhere it to the cake?

thanks :0)
A usual 'glue' for icing is apricot jam, ever so slightly loosened with a drop of water ... just a smidge though.
are they supposed to be iced?
use some fondant icing rolled out and cut to shape to make features and secure with edible glue, you can buy this from a cake decorating shop online! really worth having!........really good for sticking any icing to icing from damp to dry!...............
If they're a complicated mould, probably not.

Although, it's not impossible if you cut out the separate shapes and overlay them on the cake.

Hard to make it look good, easy to make it look like I did it. lol

search for the pan here and then the instructions click pdf link
I've done two of the Wilton cakes and was impressed how easy they were.
Use piping bags and small stars to cover main parts with small star shapes. Pipe, push down in centre and lift
Then use different sizes or plain piped lines for the main details
red - what's the point in having a shaped cake if you pipe over the top with stars etc... can you still see the contours, the highs and the lows?
Depends on the cake tin design. The moulds don't all have a huge rise in contours

Take a look here http://www.google.co....,s:0&biw=980&bih=1208
Thecwilton site even shows the Garfield cake piped

So does it help with the icing?

it gives me the idea to do any picture cake though:

1)print off picture
2)bake a large flat cake
3)mark outlines of picture by piecing holes on the printed picture and making slotted lines with craft knife
4)place sheet over cake and cover with icing sugar to show up lines
5)ice with bag following lines

simples
the garfield one looks cool.
That sounds difficult WT! Would love to hear how it goes if you try though.
I've done a Wilton castle and a dinosaur and as they were the first 2 cakes I ever iced I was really pleased.

Oh that's awful! I only made mine for my kids and they are too young to see any faults, though party guests liked them
