Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt.
We had the largest middle class in the world and Mum stayed home to raise the kids.

We didn't have JSA 100 years ago...and property prices were affordable so Mum could stay at home to raise the kids.
We had a large manufacturing industry with an excellent reputation. 2 world wars don't come cheap.
Was that in the days when this country actually had a manufacturing base?

Yes and all the big industrialists, ploughed back thousands of pounds in various schemes for the masses.

Housing, Swimming baths, Arboretums, Children's recreational grounds.etc, etc.

What do today's very wealthy entrepreneurs do for the masses?
>Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago

And we had no NHS so many children died before they were 1 year old. Life expectancy amongst the working class was probably about 45.

Not every child went to school so many grew up not being able to read or write.

We had no dole or benefits so if you had no job you did not eat.

We had no state pension, so old people had no money.

We had no social services so people just had to "get on with it" if there were problems.

Bosses got very rich by paying their staff a pittance and expecting them to work 18 hours a day .

Children as young as 6 or 7 were expected to go out to work so did not attend any schooling.

All these things like the NHS, education, dole, benefits, pensions etc all need to be paid for.

Hence we have to pay more taxes
Not that i would ever judge your knowledge Geezer but King James put Tax on Tobacco in 1604 which is well over 100 years ago.
I thought that income tax was introduced in 1799 by William Pitt to fund the Boer War, as a temporary thing. We are still waiting for it to be repealed.
Way, way back taxes were paid, you even paid a tax on how many windows you had!

Are you just making these up geezer in order to make your point seem right?
or proerty tax, come to think of it!
Wallpaper tax!
The wallpaper tax was introduced in Great Britain in 1712, during the reign of Queen Anne. Patterned, printed, or painted wallpaper was initially taxed at 1d per square yard, rising to 1s (£2.84 as of 2011),[1] by 1809. The tax was bypassed by purchasing untaxed plain paper and having it hand stenciled. The tax was abolished in 1836.[2][3]
Well, as long as they do not bring out an Answerbank or Chatterbank tax then we will be fine. This site is the only thing that matters in life, right?
Stamp duty bednobs..
"I thought that income tax was introduced in 1799"

Taxes started way, way back in the Biblical days...

"After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"

"Yes, he does," he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?"

"From others," Peter answered.

Alcohol tax (Gin Act) 1751. Inheritance taxes in one shape or another have also been around since the 18th Century.
