They say that the era of the Iceberg lettuce is coming to a close.

Perhaps that is why the photo doesn't contain a picture of an Iceberg lettuce.

But what is the real reason for the drop in popularity, perhaps it is because the price of them goes up almost every week? They are now over £1 each.

One of the best lettuces in my opinion is the Webb's Wonderful, which unfortunately I haven't seen in years

My favourite is iceburg...less than a £1 in Morrisons.
"But what is the real reason for the drop in popularity ..."

TV 'chefs' making it 'fashionable' to use more exotic-looking ingredients, with fancy-sounding names.
Well it is in the personal finance section of the telegraph!
I prefer Little Gems.Used to love Iceberg originally as they were way better than flat lettuce but I dont think they are as tasty now for some reason.
I like the crunch :-)
Yeah thats the only bit I like- feels fresher than the others :)
Public dont approve of additives & fertilisers required for uniform growth of salad crops. After 80% grants 20y ago to growers, the land is now being utilised for residential homes; in my neighborhood.

Also, stocks grown cheaper in East Europe with less DEFRA interference.
I prefer Cos/Romaine lettuce. Has a bit more flavour than Iceburg.
Iceberg lettuce has the least nutritive value.
Webbs Wonderfull is about the the only thing I grow these days, we start then in small pots and then plant them out in any spare spot in the borders and rockeries, get some funny comments about lettuce in the rockery but we also get some great lettuce
