Weight loss or gain is based on many factors. If you just took the shakes and didn't move it would just add itself to the calories you are taking. You probably don't mean weight loss/gain you mean fat loss/gain.
Protein is for muscle recovery and not solely weight gain/loss. It is an important part of muscle development, whether you want big strong muscles or a lean physique.
