A recent e-mail dropped into my in basket from one of the ready meal distributing companies (I will spare their blushes by keeping them anonymous) which listed "new meals for the winter", one of which was a Ploughman's Lunch. A nice simple olde worlde meal you might think. But just wait until you see the ingredients :-

Pork Pie (28%) (WHEAT Flour (With Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Pork (7%), Pork Lard, Water, Salt, Pork Gelatine, Starch, Pork Fat, EGG, White Pepper, Yeast Extract, Sugar, Dextrose), Bread Roll (22%) (WHEAT Flour (With Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Water, Sugar, Bread Fat (Vegetable Oils (Palm, Rapeseed), Water, Salt, Emulsifier (Mono- And Diglycerides Of Fatty Acids)), Glaze (Water, Vegetable Protein, Sunflower Oil, Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Starch), Yeast, Salt), Sweet Pickle (14%) (Sandwich Pickle Mix (Carrot, Swede, Cauliflower, Courgette, Silverskin Onion, Water, Acidity Regulator (Acetic Acid), Salt, Sequestrant (Calcium Chloride), Preservative (Sodium Metabisulphite)), Sugar, Tomato Paste, Water, Dates, Spirit Vinegar, Apple, Modified Starch, Acidity Regulator (Acetic Acid), Black Treacle, Colour (Plain Caramel), Lemon Juice Concentrate, Salt, Black Pepper, Ginger, Clove, Chilli Powder, Cinnamon, Nutmeg), Double Gloucester Cheese (MILK) (11%) (Colour (Annatto)), Mild Cheddar Cheese (MILK) (11%), Red Leicester Cheese (MILK) (11%) (Colour (Annatto)), Salted Butter (MILK) (3.0%).

I don't know what is more incredulous - you not realising the ingredients in a pickle will be more than veg sugar and vinegar, or the fact you've taken the time to type all this out.
What's your point? Haven't they got to list all ingredients for allergy purposes?
You're complaining that the ingredients have been listed in full - as they have to be, by law? Wow, are you bored or what?
It's from Wiltshire Farm Foods. If they had described it as traditionally made or something similar, I could see your point but they hadn't.
well I wouldn't consider that a ploughmans, but for a ready meal version of such it's not too bad - pork pie, roll, pickle and cheese. I would prefer some salad with mine, and pickled onions but I guess you can't easily do that with a ready meal

I posted this for amusement (hence CB not Food), not for snide comments.

Not you bednobs, your post crossed.
However, you were snide in your OP - "(I will spare their blushes by keeping them anonymous)".

All they've done to adhere to the law.
I also didn't realise it was a frozen ready meal - deffo no salad or pickled onions then :(
I might have ploughmans for lunch now
ps ploughmans should never contain apple, unless you are having the apple for afters IMO
I thought bread, cheese, pickle and an apple was a traditional ploughman's lunch. Pork Pie would go off in the heat.
I really fail to see the point of this
7% pork in the pork pie would finish me lol! No need to go any further really..........
I've had a ploughmans sandwich with pickle, cheddar and lettuce, but never a lunch. Didn't realise pork was involved.

Is it a dish you can add anything cold to? Regional variations?
I think there must be regional differences. A ploughman's up here always has cheese ,apple, pickle, and bread. Sometimes pork pie or a slice of ham depending on the pub.
