id have sponge. Im generalising here but in my opinion fruit cake is rather outdated and would appeal more to the older guests, with the sponge for the youner and child guests maybe??
OK. Marzipan - fairly universally hated on a cake.
Royal (break your teeth) icing - fairly unpleasant when on a fruit cake, having been next to marzipan.
Fruit cake - beloved of old ladies and serious traditionalists, but fairly disliked by most right-thinking people. It's too heavy after a meal
Ditch the fruit/sponge option and opt for all chocolate - everyone likes that! We did. Everyone remembers it, everyone says 'Oh, that chocolate cake at your wedding..........Yum....'
sponge cake please! with or withoiut marzipan.
Why not do a tier of each...
but please don't go for cup cake wedding cake - went to a wedding recently with them... not too good
True indeed Madam Chattenooga (and others who've suggested this). We plan to have a mixed-tier cake, but as fruitcake is richer and denser (is that a real word?) you get more slices per cake compared to an equivalent sized sponge (I can't believe I'm saying this, I usually talk about football and beer!!!). Anyway, without actually knowing what each guest's preference would be, I thought I'd see what a cross section of Answer Banker's thoughts would be on the thorny spongecake/fruitcake dilemma! I thank you one and all!!
Unless it's an excellently made fruit cake, they can often be a bit dry. I'd opt for the sponge cake (especially if I'd already eaten a meal at the reception) as it's lighter. But quite honestly, I much rather just have the marzipan, which I would eat quite happily on its own !
