What is a balanced diet

00:00 Tue 29th May 2001 |

A. It basically meansplenty of carbohydrates; starchy foodssuch as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes; with protein from foods such as milk, eggs, fish and meat; a small amount of fats from butter and margarine and drinking plenty of fluids. Dieticians recommend eating five portions of fruit and vegetables each day andadviseus to include plenty of fibreto keep the body's intestines ingood working order.

Q. Is it best to stick to certain types of food

A. Make sure the food that you eat is fresh. Always get the freshest fruit and freshest meat available and one ofthe keys to a successful balanced diet is variety. The most important thing is to eat foods which supply the body with a balanced variety of nutrients, for example, freshly squeezed orange juice, wholemeal bread, oily fish, or a simple bowl of pasta.

Q. What if you strayoff the diet and indulge in less healthy foods

A. Experts say you should try everything in moderation. A glass of red wine doesn't hurt, and a bar of chocolate every now and then can be fine. Many children throw a tantrum if they're not allowed chocolates, crisps or fizzy drinks. While these foods are not bad in small amounts, it's good to eat other things as well, especially fruit and vegetables, which supply key vitamins such as Vitamin C to help the body grow and repair and fight infections.

Milk is particularly important for young children and women. The body needs calcium to build strong bones and a regular intake of milk, yoghurt or cheese can help women ward off the bone disease osteoporosis in later life. Remember to try foods in different ways - for some the idea of cabbage is revolting but slice it raw and serve with apples and sultanas and it's a crunchy, healthy side salad.

Q. How can I eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day It's too much

A. You can easily increase the amount you consume. A glass of orange juice at breakfast time is a good start. Chop a banana or add some strawberries to your bowl of breakfast cereal or even try some fruit on toast before work. Take an apple with you for a break. At lunch add a salad to your sandwich box or if eating out, order a side salad with a baked potato or pasta dish. In the evening, slice some mushrooms, peppers and onions and stiry fry to serve with your main meal. For dessert, try some fresh fruit salad with fromage frais or creme fraiche or have some dried fruit with a cup of tea.
