What Order Do The Metal Gear Games Go In? Do I Have To Play All Of Them?

I was looking forward to getting into some new games so I thought that I would start playing the Metal Gear series. Originally I was just going to buy Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, since they are the most recent but I want to get the full story. So I was wondering which games I would need to play to understand the story in The Phantom Pain.

I am also aware that there have been multiple games over a long period of time so I was also wondering if all of them are related. For example, maybe the first three are part of a series and the next 4 are prequels or something (Just an example, those are random numbers I made up).

So basically I would just really appreciate it if someone could tell me which games in the series are related, which ones I need to play to get to Phantom Pain, and what order all of the games go in. Personal opinions on which games are your favourite are also appreciated.

well, there's been 1 to 5 and a prequel. what platform do you want them for ?
there's a PS box set which for 6 games is decent value.

The original Metal Gear Solid, on PS One is still prob the best game I've ever played, with a few twists of gameplay that were so far ahead of their time.
