VW golf Speakers?

Hi I hope someone can help? I have recently perchased a VW 1998 MKIV golf S TDI and wanted to know how many speakers it comes with as standard. because the front 2 only appear to be working. Now i dont know if this is a fault or if the back 2 are just grills with no speakers ?!

If its got a gamma radio it should have 8 speakers (4 main & 4 tweeters)

If its a 5 door the speaks will all be mounted in the doors.

Have you tried setting the balance to the rear only to see if any sound comes out?
